Argentina's food industry unions have called on politicians to develop an industrial plan, criticizing the current model for creating few jobs and relying on raw material exports.

Argentinian Unions Demand Industrial Development

Unions have called on Peronism to present an industrial development plan. The initiative was presented by Sergio Escalante, general secretary of the Food Industry Workers Union (STIA). STIA is part of the Confederation of Industrial Unions (CSIRA), where discussions are held on the country's strategic model. In this regard, Escalante stated that “we have top-level technicians and scientists, thanks to the public university. If we are all taxi drivers, who is going to request the ride?”. He also criticized the model that does not work in a country of 50 million people, as it generates very few jobs and leaves many people out of the system. “The problem is that this model does not work in a middle-income country of 50 million inhabitants like Argentina because it generates very little employment and leaves many people out of the system. This knowledge must be applied where we already have competitive advantages. The food industry is an example. We need to develop thousands of SMEs, export gourmet foods, which have the profitability that can generate better salaries,” he explained. Escalante also referred to work in apps, which in many cases lowers unemployment rates, according to the Argentine News Agency. “The person who drives for Uber for three years destroys their car and no one gives them credit to renew it because the numbers don't add up to pay the fee. Where is he going to work, how are the passengers going to make a living?” he objected. Escalante, who recently negotiated severance packages with Lamb Weston, which closed its factory in Munro, said that “this government's model is re-extractive, it only favors the extractive activity of a few commodities, such as hydrocarbons, mining, lithium, and soybeans, financial services, and destroys the rest.”
